Jaguar’s success story began with two young keen motorcyclists who started a small company at Blackpool in England to make motorcycle sidecars. The younger man, William Lyons, was a born entrepreneur and had an extraordinary flair for styling. Their early sidecars had the name Swallow and later they started making coachwork on various automobile chassis, starting with the little Austin Seven in 1927 which was a success.
Lyons designed a unique and stylish coupé - the six-cylinder SSI - and launched it at the London Motor Show in October 1931 together with a smaller four-cylinder companion model. The two cars were immensely successful. Lyons always wanted to build one of the finest luxury cars in the world and commissioned a new engine which resulted in the introduction of the hugely successful SS car.
After the Second World War, the management changed the name of the company and the cars to Jaguar from SS. Lyons felt that the name Jaguar suggested feline grace, elegance, power and agility. Later, XK 120, a new car which took the world by storm was introduced. The XK 120 C (C-Type) won the first Le Mans race and it made Jaguar a household name around the world. The XK engine was fitted to the big Mark VII luxury sedan, with room for up to six people and luggage, and with a top speed as intended of 100 mph. In 1954 the C-type gave way to the D-type which went on to win Le Mans three years running, from 1955 to 1957.
The replacement for the XK was the iconic E-type which was a great commercial success, with more than 72,000 cars made until 1974. The XJ6 and XJ12 sedans remained Jaguar's main models till the 1990s. Jaguar cars were renewed and extended during the period of Ford ownership. The magnificent, fastest and the most expensive Jaguar XJ 220 supercar, improved X300 sedan range, XJ-S and S-type sedan were launched. The expansion continued with the X-type, featuring V6 engines and four-wheel drive. The major new Jaguar that came out in the last ten years was the aluminum-bodied XJ sedan of 2002. Then in 2008, Ford decided to sell Jaguar and Land Rover to the Indian Tata Motors.
